Safety guidance during an earthquake

This guidance is for general orientation. Always follow the instructions of the local authorities.

During shaking

Take cover immediately. Shelter under a sturdy table or in a doorframe. Do not run outside. Avoid elevators. Protect your head with your arms.

Immediately after

Leave buildings carefully once shaking has stopped. Expect aftershocks. Switch off gas, electricity and water if possible. Follow official information channels.

Outdoors and coastal areas

Keep distance from buildings, power lines and trees. Near the coast: move away from the water and to higher ground immediately – do not rule out tsunami risk. Wait for official instructions.

Notes for Cres and Lošinj

Karst caves and dolines carry an increased risk of collapse and falling rock – do not enter or linger in them after a tremor. Roads can be affected by falling stones or blocked sections after rockslides, particularly on steep, rocky stretches. Wild animals such as boar, deer or sheep may be startled by a tremor and cross the road without warning – drive with heightened caution. Older stone buildings may be damaged by strong earthquakes. Ferry connections may be temporarily suspended if there is damage.
